Advanced Writing Groups

for International Graduate Students

The application form is now closed for the winter semester.

The Centre for Writers is opening a limited number of spaces in four free advanced writing groups for international graduate students (with 10 students in each group).

Starting the week of January 15, 2018, these writing groups will meet for two hours every week throughout the fall semester. Each session will offer one hour of writing skills instruction and one hour of writing practice on the participants’ own writing projects. Groups will meet in Assiniboia Hall, rooms 1-23, 1-26, 2-36, or 3-30.

Every week, participants will also receive feedback on their own ongoing or new writing projects (e.g., theses, dissertations, essays, papers, conference presentations, abstracts, articles, proposals).

The writing group facilitators are current graduate students/C4W tutors. Students are welcome to choose their group.

  • The first Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences group (for MA and PhD students who have finished their coursework ONLY), will meet at these times: Monday, 3pm-5pm
  • The second Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences groups will meet at these times: Wednesday, 3pm-5pm
  • The Writing in the Physical and Life Sciences group (for MSc students in biology, agriculture, chemistry, health, and earth sciences ONLY) will meet at this time: Tuesday, 3pm-5pm
  • The Science Writing group will meet at this time: Thursday, 3pm-5pm

Depending on the participants' needs and focus of their writing groups, potential topics covered during instruction time could include:

  •  Science writing and scientific writing
  •  Advanced editing techniques
  •  Finding and using academic sources
  •  Improving style and clarity
  •  Review of advanced English grammar
  •  Mastering punctuation
  •  Developing academic language
  •  Writing an effective CV/ resume and cover letters
  •  Writing a grant proposal
  •  Writing an abstract
  •  Writing research proposals
  •  Writing successful grant applications
  •  Preparing and publishing journal articles
  •  Developing and delivering conference presentations
  •  And more!

Space is limited, as we will accept only 10 participants per group. Applicants will be selected based on the needs of the groups. Please remember that applying does not mean that you will be invited to participate in a group, as we always get more applications than the number of students we can accept.

WEEKLY ATTENDANCE WILL BE REQUIRED. If you are selected, you will receive an email from your group facilitator early January.
