Instructors and TAs

In-class visits:

  • The Centre for Writers can send tutors to classrooms for short presentations (5-15 minutes) about our services.
  • You can also request postcards to distribute to your students.
  • For more information or to request a visit, please contact us.

Class presentations and writing groups:

  • A graduate tutor or the Director of the C4W can also come to class (for any length of time) to talk to students about specific topics (basic writing issues, how to start an assignment, how to self-edit, etc.).
  • Tutors can also meet with student groups to talk about our services or provide guidance and strategies for a specific assignment.
  • For more information or to request a visit, please contact us.

On your syllabus:

  • We hope you will mention the C4W on your syllabus and encourage ALL your students to visit us and try our services at least once. Everyone's paper can benefit from a second pair of eyes.
  • Please remind your students that the C4W is not a remedial, "fix-it" shop and that our tutors won't edit or write papers for students.
  • Because we are so busy, we hope that you won't require all your students to come to the C4W during a short period of time. However, if you contact us well ahead of time, we might be able to organize something specifically for your students. Spring/summer terms are the best times to try something new.
  • Please remind your students that tutors are not responsible for the quality of work your students submit to you nor for the grades they receive on their assignments.

For your struggling students:

  • Students who are struggling with writing assignments (theses, essays, etc.) can be matched with specific tutors and allowed to meet with that tutor for one hour every week (or more) during the whole semester (or for whatever periods of time is necessary to provide these students with the support they need).
  • The C4W tutors are trained to help ESL/multilingual students specifically and can provide a range of services to these students.
  • However, please encourage ALL your students to visit the C4W. Recommending tutoring ONLY to struggling students may actually discourage these struggling students, and others, from taking advantage of our services.
  • For more information, please contact us.

Proof of visit:

  • Sometimes, instructors need a proof that their students went to the C4W (to give extra credit to these students, for example). We’ll be happy to send notification of consultations to you but only if the students request it. Please create a form that our Administrative Assistant can sign and stamp after your students' visits and ask your students to bring a printed copy of that form to the C4W.
